Ergen's (Ear Root) novel Xian Ni (Renegade Immortal) is also listed. The character Wang Lin that appeared in mid credits is from this novel. (Li Huayuan transmigrates to this world if you are still confused about it)

A bit of additional background, the novel for Fanren is supposed to be serious and about cultivating as the main theme, but the studio has made it more lighthearted and about the relationship between the cultivators, especially romances. A lot of netizen are crying about this deviation. The subtle romance between Li Huayuan and Hong Fu never occurred in the novel, Li Huayuan was already married and devoted to someone else

Also the romance between Han Li and Nangong Wan are obvious than in the novel, even if they are not often in the presence of each other, the emotions shown by both shows that they do have strong feels for each other than shown in the novel.

Overall I quite like the changes, unlike some other novel I will not mention, but I do understand how novel purist would feel lol

Li Huayuan sacrificed himself for the one he loved Hong Fu

Absolutely disgraceful! There are many novels showing the relationships between cultivators like soul land for example... Why would they try to force this on Fanren! The greatest appeal of many fans was Han Li's cold and realistic way of life. He had to scrape by his way through fights running all over the place just to survive and become as strong as he is! His goal was immortality and everything else was secondary! That's why the novel resonated with a lot of fans. Don't water down Han Li's struggles just for a few romantic scenes. Han Li was the most methodical, selfish and focused protagonist I know in all of the Chinese novels I have read. He did not have a hero complex or think like one. Everything that wasn't meaningful was let go. If he couldn't win he ran faster than all of his enemies. He was shameless to an extent never started a battle he had no chance of winning. Before fighting he had an escape route planned out. Slippery as a slime, cunning as a fox, brutal and vengeful as a tiger! Always paid and collected his debts. A real impersonation of freedom and what it takes to achieve it.

Good improvisation on the producers side and you would think a large sect like yellow maple valley would have soul lamps, but the novel never mentioned it. And yea, that nangong shows up more although her character and attitude seems to be different from the novel but it makes her more lively.

Agreed, novel makes her ethereal and probably more hidden emotions. But I still preferred the donghua version where she's more concerned about han li (even if it is secretly) and throwing tantrums (from boat ride to the capital arc) makes her more down to earth.
